[edit] Introduction
Washington, D.C. is the city, formerly part of Maryland, on the north-east side of the Potomac River, where the U.S. Government is headquartered.
Its "District of Columbia" is a Federal Territory with the same boundaries as the city. But large areas of adjacent Maryland, and Virginia over the river, are included, for the purposes of this website, because they are functionally part of the one "city".
