Upper Falls is an unincorporated populated place in Kanawha County.

Upper Falls of Coal River is a cascading waterfall that bisects the community and provides the source of its name.

John Peter Salley discovered Upper Falls in 1742 during an expedition along the Coal River.

Meadowood Park adjoins Coal River along its eastern bank at Upper Falls.

Big Bend Golf Course is a par-17 championship course that lies alongside the west bank of Coal River below the falls.

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and Humphreys Memorial United Methodist Church serve the spiritual needs of the community.

At 614 feet above sea level, temperatures are milder than much of the region and humidity is high.

Coal River Flood Remediation Project seeks to end the flooding of Coal River.

Public roads provide the only means of ingress and egress for Upper Falls residents. There was once an Upper Falls train station that provided both passenger and freight service, but it no longer exists. Coal River is still a federally-designated navigable waterway, which is a relic of the steam era when tugboats plied its waters, navigating a system of wooden locks.
