I've started grabbing pages and moving them over. One tidbit -- it's common that people will misspell the city name. They switch the S and the C. Just an alert, since I noticed a template with that and fixed it. ~Kimbayne

This proposed merger seems to be taking longer than I expected.

The following is on Angela's Talk page (now archived):

"Consolidating Cities?
"Angela - Kimbayne and I have discussed merging the Tucson Wikicity, which was up for adoption and to which Kim had been the main contributor and founder, into the Cities Wikicity. Would that be ok? Could the existing pages be ported over (preferably with a "Tucson:")? If it can't be done with a mass move, I guess we could do manual copy and paste. Then Tucson could be closed down, but the content and opportunities to grow would remain. And it would greatly enrich the content on the Cities site. I assume that the "yes" means they can move the files. I left a message for Kimbayne on the current Tucson Wikicity (w:c:tucson:User talk:Kimbayne). I was hoping to hear from her about the freeze time, but if we don't soon... I'm not sure about the prefix? --CocoaZen 22:42, 29 Sep 2005 (UTC)
With all respect, Cocoa, you didn't ask if "they" would do anything. The "Yes, that sounds fine. Let me know when you want me to lock the Tucson wiki from editing" doesn't suggest to me that Angela has agreed to do something. To me it looks like an answer to "merging the Tucson Wikicity ... into the Cities Wikicity. Would that be ok?" and/or "we could do manual copy and paste".
One of us (probably not Kim, who, as she indicated, is having a sort of wikiholiday) may have to look hard at some of the following:
Then you could reply to Angela, saying we don't know how (or the best way if there are two or more ways) to merge wikicities but would welcome instructions. Mention this page, maybe.

We have a not-quite-standard template (the same idea as "enWP") to make it easy and clear to show where the pages come from: {{K}} for easy typing. See how to use it.


[edit] Prefix for subpages

"[[Tucson:..." Is the obvious prefix, which CocoaZen has suggested, but I foresee (or have already experienced) a problem - links in that form may try to go to Kim's place. Try Tucson:Education - hmmm, that seems OK. If it's a problem, how about "[[TucsonWiki:..."?

Seems to be OK. Even accepts the "pipe" convetion so that a link such as Education (typed "[[Tucson:Education|]]") shows in the abbreviated form but will go where it should.


[edit] Tucson new "main" page

It's a good portal now, so we can make it even more of one with more direct links to major Tucson pages and a bit of a guide to some useful "Cities" pages. But first we can copy any pages that were the targets of "currently dead" links and can or should have direct links from it (like the "city" page that I've done), so that it has maximum value ASAP.

The links to categories currently go to "Cities" categories (some not yet existing). They can be redirected to relevant pages (see below).

In theory we can produce a current "tree" of main categories (which we can edit here by adding new target when created, so as to see what still needs to be done and which new relationships might be a good idea). But the abovememtioned problems mean it will be a circular thicket.


Most can be reproduced as mini-portal pages with the same text (if any) plus a list of the "same" articles and subcategories.

As images are moved over, the naming is adjusted. "Tucson" is added to the begining of the file name. So Image:X.jpg from the Tucson Wikicity becomes Image:TucsonX.jpg here. See Special:Imagelist for the list of images here.

Didn't move over the stop hand because of potential copyright violations. Need to check on the jokebook image.

  • Tucson namespace but may not be appropriate. administrators should be the town's administrators, probably the same for the about page - just those 2 on Tucson

The IP talk pages were just announcements of this move, so they don't need to be copied. Kim's user page was moved. Robin Patterson's just referred to the page here, so not copied.

  • Help:Editing is huge and was added in 3 hits in the space of 7 minutes; I guess Kim copied nearly all of it but do we have a better one?

  • Tucson has 17; we've discussed them elsewhere, I think, and I doubt if their text has a great deal that would improve our versions - maybe Kim can confirm - or look them up to disprove that assumption and copy over any text that could help here.
