Melbourne

Melbourne is the capital city of the Australian state of Victoria. The metropolitan area has a population of approximately 3.6 million, making it Australia's second largest city (behind Sydney, Melbourne's traditional rival). It was briefly the seat of national government at the time of Federation in 1901.

Melbourne is primarily famous for its cultural activities: it has a thriving live performance and festival culture, including the world famous Melbourne International Comedy Festival. It is also the home of Australian Rules Football and the nation's most famous sporting ground (the Melbourne Cricket Ground).

In 1835, Melbourne was "bought" from the aboriginies by John Batman.

Citizens of Melbourne are known as Melburnians.
