Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand, but the name is used in wider contexts:

1. Wellington Region adds three other cities and four districts, extending to just north of Otaki and east to the Castlepoint vicinity
2. Wellington as a sports team identifier varies in extent depending on which sport is involved (and even the type of contest within a given sport)
3. Wellington Province is much larger, extending as far as Wanganui; that meaning has been of diminishing effect since the abolition of the formal provinces in 1876.
