Australia is a medium-sized country of around 20 million people. It is considered either the world's largest island, or the world's smallest continent.
Australia is best known for its sporting prowess and primary industries (particularly mining and sheep and cattle farming).
The population of Australia is mainly concentrated in coastal cities, as the inland areas are largely desert. The largest cities are the state and territory capitals - Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart and Darwin - and the national capital, Canberra.
